STREET VIEW
Terrain Biennial 2019 - Enos Park, Illinois
While in residence in Enos Park as a Terrain Exhibitions Artist-in-Residence, I went on several walks around the neighborhood, and then repeated those walks virtually using Google Street View. Based on these explorations, the installation STREET VIEW features objects using text and imagery drawn from technological dysfunctions visible in the virtual map of the area. STREET VIEW includes: a faux rock with an plaque engraved with the common Google Earth error message, “Sorry, we have no imagery here”, a mirrored sculpture abstracting the form of the accidental shadow sometimes visible in Google Street View, cast by the car-mounted camera used to record panoramic street-level imagery, and a set of perforated vinyl shades on the porch depicting the 3D modeled satellite imagery of the trees that obscures the site within the map’s navigational interface. Through this installation, STREET VIEW intends to fragment our experience of the site between the physical and virtual, as well as serving as a reminder of the constant surveillance by contemporary mapping technologies.
